The text message received by you is indeed a scam. Similar messages are sent to thousands of phone numbers. Some of those who have account with HSBC Bank may fall for the scam, thinking it was a genuine alert.
The automated system will ask the victim to key-in, card number, name, date of birth and even the security code! And at the end of it, it will declare that your card is reactivated!
We should call our banks only at it’s official phone number which would be at the back of the bank card. Scammers call and send text messages pretending to be a Bank and will either direct victims to a phishing site or would try to extract account info over the phone.
The scammers are able to send such spam texts to thousands of phone numbers, effortlessly. They just need to type out that sentence. Add a large list of phone numbers and press send! The computer dials the numbers one after the other to send text message or would leave voice messages. When unfortunate victims call back, the system dupes them into sharing their card number, expiry date, DoB and even the PIN
According to HSBC Bank: "If you suspect a fraudulent transaction involving an HSBC account, you should immediately call the phone number on your monthly account statement or on the back of your credit/debit card."
