The CMS is sending New Medicare Cards to Consumers & Scammers Find an Opportunity in it!

Article by SCF. Filed Under: Medicare, Medical Scam

"Hi this is Sean Parker representing Medicare. We are replacing old cards having Social Security Numbers with new ones with Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). You need to verify your identity to avoid losing your Medicare Benefits"

What would you do if you receive a similar call? If you are unaware of the fact that the new cards with MBI numbers are being sent automatically without you ever having been even called, you might fall for the scam and end up sharing vital information.

With the passage of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is required to replace all cards that currently use a recipient’s Social Security Number with one that uses a new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). This change was mandated by Congress to help protect citizens from identity theft and fraud.

  • You don’t need to pay to receive the new Medicare Cards.
  • Representatives from Medicare would not call you before sending a new card
  • The caller may threaten that you will lose your Medicare coverage unless you verify your identity by providing your Social #, bank account or credit card information. That’s a fraud! Medicare will never ask for your Social Security number or bank /  credit card information.

If you receive a scam call, please report the number at www.scamcallfighters.com

Do report to the FTC too at: www. ftccomplaintassistant.gov
